Joaquín Martínez Vega, o.m.i. Postulador General

DIA 1

“No debes desanimarte.

WILLING TO GIVE THEIR LIVES

“The Church, that glorious inheritance purchased by Christ the Saviour at the cost of his own blood, has in our days been cruelly ravaged. The beloved spouse of God's only begotten Son is torn with anguish as she mourns the shameful defection of the children she herself bore.
“The sight of these evils has so touched the hearts of certain priests, zealous for the glory of God, men with an ardent love for the Church, that they are willing to give their lives, if need be, for the salvation of souls.
“And how should men who want to follow in the footsteps of Christ?
• They must strive to be saints.
• They must wholly renounce themselves.
• They must be ready to sacrifice goods, talents, ease, self, even their life, for the love of Jesus Christ, the service of the Church, and the sanctification of their brethren.”
This is the ideal which St. Eugene de Mazenod proposes for his Oblates.

“Belonging to the bright and glorious army of martyrs are not a few Spanish Christians killed out of hatred for the faith in the years 1936-1939 by a wicked persecution of the Church, its members and its institutions. With special hatred and cruelty, bishops, priests and religious were persecuted; their only “crime” was believing in Christ, preaching the Gospel and bringing people along the way of salvation.” (John Paul II)

INTRODUCTION

On May 21, 1861, the Bishop of Marseille, St. Eugene de Mazenod, died a holy death. So this year, 2011, marks the 150th anniversary of his dies natalis, his birth into heaven.
We wanted to use this anniversary to highlight, through the glorification of some Oblates, that the spiritual path taken by this Holy Founder is a sure way to holiness.
For this reason, the Superior General of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate filed a “petition” with the Holy See, joined by Cardinals, Bishops and many faithful, requesting and acceleration of the process of the Cause of the Oblate Martyrs of Spain, in order to celebrate their Beatification in this jubilee year.
This petition was kindly received and therefore, we have the immense joy of assisting at this event on December 17, 2011, in the Cathedral of Madrid.
Cardinal Angelo Amato, Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, in a friendly chat with Fr. General and the Postulator, told us that we had to get moving so that this celebration would be a kairos, that is, a moment of grace and source of spiritual animation for the entire Oblate family, and not only for it…
This booklet has no other purpose than to quite simply provide some ideas for such animation, combining the charism of St. Eugene during his 150th anniversary year, with the heroic witness of some of his sons upon the 75th anniversary of their martyrdom.
We thank Fr. Frank Santucci, animator of the Oblate charism, for his considerable contribution to this booklet with his article, Oblation, a dynamo which generates energy, published in Missioni OMI (6 / 2011). In it, I found most of what inspired me in reference to St. Eugene.
                                    Joaquín Martínez Vega, o.m.i.

DAY 1
Oblation and Martyrdom

From the earliest days of the Missionary Oblates, they used the term “oblation” in speaking about religious consecration: temporal oblation, perpetual oblation.
It seems that, in the beginning, St. Eugene de Mazenod did not plan to found a new community of missionaries nor a new religious congregation. He wanted neither more nor less than this: to continue “the apostolic life” in its most authentic and original meaning, that is to say, to relive here and now the life of the Apostles with Jesus. To do that, more than giving missions or doing ministry, he wanted above all to collaborate with Jesus Christ the Savior in the work of redemption. To do this “mission” well, it was necessary to follow in the “footsteps of the Apostles,” to whom Jesus had said: “You will be my witnesses to the very ends of the world.”
WITNESS, in Greek, the language of the New Testament, means MARTYR.
St. Eugene required of “anyone who wishes to be one of us, a burning zeal,” “a self-giving love,” a preferential love for the most abandoned: to love without measure, to love with the same measure as the love of Christ: to the very giving of one’s life. For this, he required that each Oblate be ready to give his life. And if this happens with the shedding of one’s blood, we have martyrdom or a bloody oblation, the supreme oblation.
Therefore, St. Eugene wished for himself the grace of martyrdom. It was one of the intentions of his First Mass. He asked for: “final perseverance and also martyrdom, or at least death while assisting victims of the plague.” For “martyrdom out of charity will not have a lesser reward than martyrdom for the faith.” (26.01.1854: letter to a gravely ill missionary)

Testimony of the Martyrs
“I’ve always been deeply moved by stories of martyrdom. When I read them, I am overpowered by a secret desire to suffer the same fate. That would be the greatest priesthood to which all of us Christians could aspire: to give each one’s own body and blood as a holocaust for the faith. What an honor, to die as a martyr!”
These are the very words of one of the Martyrs, Gregorio Escobar, in a letter written to his family as he was preparing for his ordination.

Pause in silent meditation…
Final prayer:

Almighty and eternal God
Who granted to Francisco Esteban
and his martyred companions
the grace of giving their lives for Christ,
through a bloody oblation,
help us in our weakness,
so that through their intercession
and following their example,
we too might remain firm in our faith
and might be able to give our lives for others
through the “martyrdom of charity,”
according to the teaching
of St. Eugene de Mazenod;
and in this way,
we might be able to give witness to the world
about who Jesus Christ is.
We ask this through the intercession
of our Mother, Mary Immaculate,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
R. Amen.

DAY 2
Oblation as a radical option for God

Young Eugene, fiery of character, full of life, knowing no half measures, 25 years old, has an intuition that gives full meaning to his life. One Good Friday, during the adoration of the Cross, he understood that God loved him immensely. This intuition was like a magnet attracting to itself, like metal filings, all aspects of his life. It was a special grace that would radically change the course of his life. He had to direct it exclusively towards his only goal: God. This awareness of knowing he was loved by God gave full meaning to everything.
Looking at Jesus Christ who had given everything for him, Eugene, as a logical consequence, decided to consecrate himself totally to God. “I want to live only for You.” (Good Friday) “Everything for God.” (Vespers of his priestly ordination) “To be everything for God and everything for everyone.” (Retreat notes) He wants to dedicate himself to preaching the Gospel by “serving Him without reserve and consecrating my life for the spread of the Gospel.” (Holy Thursday, private vows with Fr. Tempier)
Here Eugene uses a Word that sums up his entire life: “oblation.” The oblation of Jesus Christ (the first Oblate) on the cross and the oblation of Eugene are identical. If Jesus loved us so much as to give his life, he must give his life for others just as Jesus did.

Testimony of the Martyrs
“From the moment we were arrested (when they held us at gun point, face to the wall), we each had the thought in mind of being killed because we were religious. Within us, the only thing that arose was a spirit of forgiveness on the one hand, and on the other, a desire to offer our lives for the Church, for peace in Spain and for those who we thought were going to shoot us. The only motive that guided us was supernatural, since humanly speaking, we had lost everything. We knew that if they killed us, it was out of hatred for the Christian faith.” (Fr. Felipe Diez, OMI, survivor)

Pause in silent meditation…
Final prayer:

Almighty and eternal God
Who granted to Francisco Esteban
and his martyred companions
the grace of giving their lives for Christ,
through a bloody oblation,
help us in our weakness,

and in this way,
we might be able to give witness to the world
about who Jesus Christ is.
We ask this through the intercession
of our Mother, Mary Immaculate,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
R. Amen.

DAY 3
Oblation in community attracts others

“A burning zeal for the salvation of people” and the spirit of oblation were what attracted others to join him. In the measure in which one’s life is converted into a reflection of God’s love, in the same measure, it attracts others. Just think of the nearly three hundred youth who gathered around him twice a week, of his first missionaries who joined him in 1815 to spread the Gospel through the villages of Provence, of the youth who over the years would join him to become Oblates. Today, as a canonized saint, he continues to be a source of inspiration for us, taking us by the hand to the very source of strength, God’s love. Eugene always insisted that his Oblates, before proclaiming to others “who Jesus Christ is,” had to identify with Him. The vocation of the Oblates was to arrive at being “oblates” in the full sense of this world as he understood and lived it. “Oblate,” each one personally and “Oblates” in community.

Testimony of the Martyrs
(They expelled them from the house) and, “following the instructions of the Superiors, each one sought refuge in the private homes of family members or acquaintances, remaining in this (secret) location until the month of October 1936. In the meantime, Fr. Esteban, as well as Fr. Blanco and Fr. José Vega, risking their own lives, managed to secretly visit the scholastics, encouraging them in their fidelity and their religious commitments. As a concrete example, I remember hearing from Fr. Porfirio that, on December 12, feast of Our Lady of the Pillar, patroness of the scholasticate, some of the Servants of God got together and spent several hours in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament which they were secretly keeping; in late afternoon, they took communion, what would be their Viaticum.” (Fortunato Alonso, OMI) Another testimony: “I asked (my brother Clemente) how he was holding up and he told me: ‘We are in danger and we are afraid they will separate us; we encourage one another. However, if we must die, I am ready and I am sure that God will give us the strength we need to be faithful.’” (Josefa, Sister of the Holy Family of Bordeaux)

DAY 4
The Mission of Eugene: to reveal to the most abandoned who they are in the eyes of God

The Congregation grew out of an irresistible urge to teach Christians who Jesus Christ is so as to reveal to all human beings their own dignity as children of God. They directed their ministry in the first place to the most abandoned of society and the Church: the peasants of Provence, the inmates of prisons, the youth who were an easy prey for manipulation by the revolutionaries.
The Bishop of Digne, noticing the life and activity of the Missionaries of Provence, asked them to take charge of the Shrine of Our Lady of Laus. This Marian shrine was tumbledown and abandoned. Fr. Tempier, the first superior of this new community, brought with him the young Oblates in formation. This lively community became a center that influenced the whole region. Large crowds came and filled to overflowing this forgotten church which, with the Oblates’ presence, became a privileged place for encountering Jesus Christ, the Savior.
The phenomenon repeated itself in Marseille after the mission of 1820. Eugene set up the mission cross in the ruins of a church destroyed during the Revolution, and that church became the “Church of the Calvary.” Thousands and thousands of marginalized people: laborers, immigrants, especially Italians, approached the fountainhead of the Savior. When Eugene started this ministry, about 6,000 came; at his death, they were more than 30,000.

Testimony of the Martyrs
Animosity against the Oblates was growing on the part of the enemies of the faith. Fr. Pablo Fernandez describes it: “The Oblates of Pozuelo were greatly appreciated and valued by believers; they were called upon to attend religious meetings and celebrations of patronal feasts and for other solemnities. They were also called upon to give retreats. This good reputation among believers was just the opposite to the animosity of the extremist groups and the anarchists, out of hatred of the faith. This atmosphere was due to the fact that the community of the Missionary Oblates were the ones who were fostering Christian life all around Pozuelo: Aravaca, Majadahonda y Húmera.”

Final prayer:

Almighty and eternal God
Who granted to Francisco Esteban
and his martyred companions
the grace of giving their lives for Christ,
through a bloody oblation,
help us in our weakness,
so that through their intercession
and following their example,
we too might remain firm in our faith
and might be able to give our lives for others
through the “martyrdom of charity,”
according to the teaching
of St. Eugene de Mazenod;
and in this way,
we might be able to give witness to the world
about who Jesus Christ is.
We ask this through the intercession
of our Mother, Mary Immaculate,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
R. Amen.

DAY 5
Oblation lived for the diocese of Marseille

In 1832, Eugene was ordained a bishop and began a new mission in his life, one that would last for 37 years. In 1837, the Pope asks something of him that he did not want: to take charge of the diocese of Marseille. Nevertheless, this would become for him a new opportunity to live his oblation in service of the Church and he gave himself completely to this end. “I must give my all to these people, as a father for his children. My very existence, my life, my whole being must be devoted to this; I must think only of their good, with the sole fear of not having done enough for their good, their sanctification. I shall have no other goal than to seek their spiritual good and, in a certain way, also their temporal good. In a word, I must be consumed for them, ready to sacrifice my own comfort, my desires, my rest, my very life for them.” And indeed he did. During his episcopacy, Marseille doubled in population. The bishop set up and constructed more than 40 parishes. Known for his closeness to the people, he glowed with the energy of his oblation, daily receiving “his people” into his home; in his morning correspondence and his pastoral visits in the afternoon, always giving preference to the poorest and most abandoned. He founded many religious and social works to meet the many spiritual and material needs of his diocese. The diocese, which had been without a pastor for years and was about to be suppressed, recovered and thrived.

Testimony of the Martyrs
Among the Martyrs are three Oblate Brothers. A surviving witness says: “In a special way, I want to highlight the example of the Lay Brothers who joyfully accomplished the most humble tasks in the community and were an encouragement for all of us. Specifically, I remember Brothers Bocos, Sánchez and Prado who gave us a cheerful and simple example in their daily work. They lived as an exemplary sacrifice in the various ministries they had. They lived the virtue of poverty by accepting the reality of our lives so lacking in material things. They lived the Gospel in love and fidelity to their work, seeking, as it says in the Gospel, ‘to serve and not be served.’”

DAY 6
An Oblation that crosses seas

St. Eugene, Bishop of the second largest diocese in France, continued being Superior General of the Oblates, guiding from a distance their missionary zeal. He sent them to Canada, the United States, England, Ireland, Algeria, South Africa and Ceylon. He energized them with his letters, with his constant and fatherly solicitude; he urged them on to total generosity. If they were tempted to be discouraged, because they were not reaping the fruits of their dedication, as in the case of the first missionaries to South Africa among the obstinate Zulus, he encouraged them not to step back. “You must not be discouraged. A day will come in which the merciful grace of God will produce a kind of explosion and your African Church will be well planted,” he wrote, shortly before his death, to Blessed Joseph Gerard, the Apostle of Lesotho. And that “explosion of grace” made the Congregation grow during the last 20 years of the Founder’s life: from 46 to 415 members. This missionary explosion continues today with the presence of his Oblates in 67 nations on the five continents, including many lay faithful who “associate” themselves. The key word in the life of Eugene is “oblation” and, in imitation of Jesus Christ, he lived it for the benefit of others. May St. Eugene be a source of inspiration for all of us.

Testimony of the Martyrs
The vocation of a child can put to test a mother’s love: “It is God who wants it, mama; do not be sad and don’t make me sad. Be generous and give back to God the one who was His before being yours.” In the novitiate, he gave her is junior’s cross, telling her: “Kiss it often and, come what may, remember that everything we suffer for Him, as much as it seems, will be very little compared to how He loves us and suffered for us.” In saying goodbye to another mother who hid them in her home: “Don’t be sad; I will return, but if something happens or they kill me, remember that I will be with God and will help you.” After his martyrdom, his mother wanted to find traces of her son in the ruins of the prison. His sister says: “Suddenly she began to shout: Here! Here! We went in with her and we saw the wall covered with writing. I could see that in one corner, there were some words that stood out more than others because they were written in red and they said: ‘Mother, they are taking me out to kill me; I am dying for God. Don’t cry: I am going to God. Long live Christ the King!’ and it was signed ‘Publio’.”

Oblazione e Martirio

- Devono lavorare seriamente a diventare santi,

Pausa, preghiamo in silenzio…

Pausa preghiamo in silenzio…

3° giorno
L’oblazione in comunità attira altri…è contagiosa!

In quel periodo, P. Esteban e i PP. (Fortunato Alonso, OMI). “Chiesi (a mio fratello Clemente) come stavano, mi rispose: «Siamo in pericolo e temiamo che ci separino; insieme, ci facciamo coraggio a vicenda.

P. Tempier scrive: “Volete sapere cosa facciamo qui? Ascoltiamo tantissime confessioni.

Dicevano: “Mamma, mi portano via per uccidermi, muoio per Dio. Non piangere, me ne vado con Dio. Viva Cristo Re! Firmato: “Publio”.

                                                      Joaquín Martínez Vega, o.m.i.

qui as accordé à Francisco Esteban
par l’oblation de leur sang;
selon la consigne de Saint Eugène de Mazenod;
